if walk four was concerned with the personal marks of experience and temporary presence in the city, walk 5 was more about permanence. i started the walk with an interest in city texts. our cities are bombarded with texts, whether civic, authoritative, hand-made or graffiti. i was interested in how many texts there were on the perimeter walk and set about collecting. idea one was to photograph them all, but i soon realised that my memory card would have to be the size of a mainframe - in fact there were just too many texts to collect in any form - i'd have to be selective and actually, this suited. what follows is a photographic selection and an extract from the walk of a written version of every text i chose, through mood and instinct, to note. i think you could do this exercise 100 times along the same route and get 100 different collections.
